“Do not deny us our sedatives.”
— Rene Crevel

I remember being a kid
and there was this girl

She lived across the street
Jamestown Crescent
city housing
where kids grow up on
bologna sandwiches
noise and anger
and little hope.

Vera never said much
and was a few years old than me.

When I’d visit she would
sit there on the lawn chair outside
and slowly put a needle and thread
through her forearm.

I never understood what she was doing. …

I’ve been a beer drinker for a long time. Sat in many a pub and bar watching other beer drinkers (as closet intellectuals so often do — sit and watch and think the world). I’ve downed, supped, gulped, guzzled, drank beer on all continents save Antarctica and I have found some curious sins that have long gone unnoticed and unpunished. I am going to put a stop to that.

Here are the 7 sins of beer drinkers that I think we should rail against and even I hope (if there is a god) send said drinkers committing the sins into…

Why I turned out the way I am

It’s for your own good
my father belted.
My mother did the same
at the dinner table with peas.
Mr. Drury in grade 7 had me
write lines of “P”s,
“It’s for your own good.” he opined.

books me monthly to see a doctor
as much a dunce as a doctor can be.
All he offers are pills and pleasantries.
They both…

First, they came for those who protested,
and I did not speak out —
because I was not a protester.

Then they came for the journalists who spoke out,
and I did not speak out —
because I didn’t agree with their kind of news.

Then they came for those who took unauthorized medicine,
and I did not speak out —
because my doctor was not one who’d prescribe that.

Then they came for the doctors who didn’t follow CDC orders,
and I did not speak out —
because my doctor did.

Then they came for those who refused the…

When I think about the great events of pre-history and history, I think of the dawning of human consciousness and intellect — man the toolmaker, user. I think of the appearance of language — man the meaning maker. I think of the spread of agriculture and city growth — man the social, communal creature. Lastly, I think of the Enlightenment, just a moment in time ago — man, free, a self-thinker, under nobody’s thumb.
